Case Study: Sales Planning Tool
Company: Aptive Environmental
Role: Lead UX Designer (Sole Designer)
Duration: 1.5 months
Team: James Draper (PM), Jon McCutchan (Engineer)
Impact: +13% sales • 25,772 new accounts • $25.5M in Revenue
The Challenge
Aptive's door-to-door sales reps lacked the tools to plan their routes strategically. Managers were flying blind—territories were often oversaturated or inefficiently covered, and high-value areas were left untapped.
We needed a solution to help managers assign reps more strategically and maximize every knock.
The Opportunity
Feedback from our field managers revealed a need for smarter planning tools. With VP of Sales buy-in, we launched this as a hackathon initiative. The goal: build a fully functional tool that could assign the right reps to the right places—with real data to back it up.
The Solution
In just 1.5 months, our 3-person team shipped a powerful Sales Planning Tool.
Key Features:
🔥 Affluence-Based Heatmaps
Census data helped us score neighborhoods and visualize high-opportunity zones. We used a hexagon grid to avoid overlap and cleanly define boundaries.🧭 Rep Assignment Tool
Managers could drag and drop reps into top-performing zones and plan routes with confidence.⚡ Live Feedback Loop
Because our team worked side by side, we moved fast, adjusted quickly, and kept shipping without red tape.
💬 “The hexagon grid was my favorite piece—it brought clarity to chaotic maps and helped reps visualize their goals clearly.”
The Impact
🚀 13% increase in total sales
📈 25,772 new accounts created
💰 $25.5M in additional revenue
📌 Contributed to 2% overall company sales growth (~$509K)
Managers gained confidence. Reps worked smarter. Everyone won.
